‘A day becomes memorable when it has something special to hold with and one such special date is 17th march, and the traditional death date of Saint Patrick.’
Saint Patrick, son of Calpirus (Roman British army officer) was born in the later half of 4th century A.D. His doctrine is interpreted as Anti-Pelagian.This day commemorates the arrival of Christianity in Ireland and even marks it as the day of celebration of the culture and heritage of Irish England. On this day, Irish families attend church in the morning and celebrate it in the afternoon. People dress themselves in green attire, as the color green represents Ireland since 1640’s. Moreover it has been regarded as a public holiday for over a period of 1000 years.
Slowly this event progressed from a day to a four day event. The very first event was celebrated on 17th march, 1996. In 2006, this festival progressed to a five day event. The celebrations involves, public parades, festivals, formal gatherings, dances are performed. At the end of the celebration, shamrock is put into the cup, and a toast is prepared by putting whisky, in glasses. Shamrock is either swallowed or tossed over the shoulders and is considered as good luck.
It is celebrated in different parts of Europe (Great Britain, Russia, Scotland,); in Asia (Japan, Korea, Malaysia); North America; South America, and in each part this day is marked with great pomp and show.
