Juneteenth also known as Freedom Day, Emancipation Day or Juneteenth Independence Day is celebrated on June 19 every year.

History: This day is dedicated to the announcement of abolition of slavery of African-American in Texas, United States on June 19, 1965. President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862, with an effective date of January 1, 1863, but even after two and a half years it had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the Orders. However with the arrival of General Granger’s regiment and surrender of General Lee in April, 1865 the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance to establish law and order.

Juneteenth is a portmanteau of June and Nineteenth. June + teenth = Juneteenth.
