Grammatical Meaning: In literature the semicolon is just a punctuation mark that separates major sentence elements.
Origin Of Semicolon Tattoos: Before 2013 people who are deeply in love with literature and grammar used to have this tattoo but after 2013 its meaning changed completely. In April 2013 Amy Bleuel from Wisconsin, United States started the nonprofit movement Project Semicolon aimed to “presenting hope and love to those who are struggling with depression, suicide, addiction, and self-injury”. In this movement they encourage people to have a semicolon tattoo as a form of solidarity and to convey a strong message that you chose to fight, even when everything else was against you. Even if you have never suffered from such illness you can tattoo it to show respect, love, hope and support for your loved ones who had gone through it.
Why Semicolon Symbol?
According to Amy Bleuel (She told in an interview): “In literature, an author uses a semicolon to not end a sentence but to continue on. We see it as you are the author and your life is the sentence. You’re choosing to keep going.”
On March 23, 2017 at the age of 31, Amy Bleuel died due to depression. She might lost her battle but given hope and inspired millions of people around the world to fight against mental illness likes depression, suicide, addiction, and self-injury.
